Standard German (Hoch Deutsch) has around 90 million native speakers, and other varieties of German have some 30 million. There are about 80 million people who speak German as a second language, and many others study it as a foreign language.
German is one of the three most commonly studied, and one of the ten most commonly spoken languages in the world.
German is also one of the five most commonly used languages on the Internet.
Standard German originates from a Saxon dialect used by Martin Luther to translate the Bible in the early 16th century. Reformation leader chose that dialect because he himself came from Saxony, but also because Saxon combined the elements of dialects spoken in all German speaking regions. Later, writers like Goethe and Schiller, philosophers like Kant and Nietzsche and musicians like Mozart, Beethoven and Bach used this language to express themselves.
